ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)

ALS is a disease that kills the nerve cells controlling the muscles, leading to paralysis and loss of speech.

Brad Smith, patient 3, was Neuralink's first participant with ALS and uses his implant to type and to speak through an AI copy of his voice. ALS participants also join the VOICE trial, where the implant reads speech directly, and Lee Marten became the first Canadian with ALS to receive an implant in May 2026.
