Brain-computer interface (BCI)

A brain-computer interface is a system that reads brain activity and turns it into commands for a computer or machine.

A BCI lets a person move a cursor, type, or steer a robotic arm by intending the movement, with no hands involved. Neuralink builds an implanted BCI, which records from electrodes placed inside the brain, while headsets and other noninvasive BCIs read weaker signals through the skull.
