Breakthrough Device Designation is an FDA program that speeds up review for devices that could treat serious conditions.
It gives a company earlier and more frequent feedback from the FDA, though the device still has to pass every safety test. Neuralink has received it for its implant in 2020, for Blindsight in September 2024 (Neuralink), and for speech restoration in May 2025 (Neuralink).
