VOICE is Neuralink's trial of an implant that turns attempted speech into spoken words for people who have lost their voice.
The study runs at UT Southwestern in Dallas (NCT07224256) and enrolls adults with severe speech loss from ALS, stroke, or similar conditions. The implant goes into the speech motor cortex, and Neuralink's stated goal is 140 words per minute, close to normal conversation (Neuralink). In September 2026 the third participant, Terence (Terry) Mandable, spoke to his wife in a voice rebuilt from recordings made before ALS (Neuralink video).
